Tithe-ing

Then we cried out to the LORD, the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice and saw our misery, toil and oppression. 8 So the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror and with miraculous signs and wonders. 9 He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey; 10 and now I bring the firstfruits of the soil that you, O LORD, have given me.” Place the basket before the LORD your God and bow down before him. 11 And you and the Levites and the aliens among you shall rejoice in all the good things the LORD your God has given to you and your household.

Often, I have wondered, if my expected giving of 10% was really enough. Let me illustrate what 10% really looks like. Take a glass of water and fill it. Right to the brim. Take a good look at it. This is what is given to me.

Now pour it out, slowly, and keep pouring until there's just a tenth of it left in the glass. This is what I'm expected to give and am free to blow the rest on anything I like.

I have struggled with the idea that I was'nt giving God enough. Until the time that I started to finish the months with less than 5 dollars in my bank account. Suddenly, that same 10% seemed like it would have taken me so comfortably across that month, surplus and all. A temptation to not give the following month. A little has become a significant Lot.

So what changed?

I have now learnt, that when I believe it is small, it will be small.
That when I believe it is big, it is made big.

Why?

Because whatever I bind on earth, is bound in heaven, and whatever I release, is also released in heaven.
